How we conduct our tree stump removal services

Our professional stump grinding equipment can quickly remove any pesky stumps from your outdoor space. After you contact us, we will survey your space, assess the access options, and choose the appropriate machinery for a safe and speedy tree stump removal.

Our stump grinders tear up the wood below the soil, ensuring there’s no sucker regrowth. You won’t be left with a huge hole to refill, and the level surface means you can recover with topsoil or turf for a refreshed outdoor space.

Stump grinding vs stump removal: What’s the difference?

“Stump removal” is a general term that can mean either grinding or manually digging the stump out entirely — roots and all. At The Tree Fella, we usually recommend stump grinding, as it’s faster, less disruptive, and effective for most situations.

Here’s why we prefer stump grinding (when it’s feasible):

Speed: Grinding is much quicker than manual removal. Most stumps can be ground down in a few minutes, depending on size.

Less Disruption: Grinding removes the visible part of the stump and some surface roots, leaving the area neat without a large hole. The leftover woodchips can even be reused as mulch. We can work close to utilities, like electric and gas, or paving and patios without causing damage. Gone are the days of pulling a stump out and lifting half your garden with it.

Replanting & Landscaping: Grinding usually allows for replanting or paving over the area once the woodchips and residue are cleared.

Cost: Stump grinding is typically more affordable than full removal, thanks to the specialised equipment and machinery we use, with no need for extra soil to fill a large hole. The leftover woodchips can be reused as mulch.

When Stump Grinding Isn’t Possible:

The machine requires at least 70cm of clear access and can’t be used where stumps are:

  • Obstructed by bricks, rocks, or other debris
  • Surrounded by concrete
  • In walled gardens or tight corners

In those cases, manual removal may be the only option – though it’s more labour-intensive, it works when the grinder can’t get in.

Alternatives to stump grinding

Stump grinding isn’t always the right solution – whether due to access issues, budget, or wanting to do something more wildlife-friendly. Here are two effective alternatives we offer:

Eco-Plugs for Tree Stump Treatment:

A cost-effective, low-impact method for stopping regrowth. We use Ecoplug Max, a licensed herbicide that releases glyphosate directly into the stump. This option is ideal when grinding isn’t possible or practical. Our team is fully trained and certified to apply Ecoplug Max safely and responsibly.

Wildlife-Friendly Stump Monoliths:

If you’re passionate about supporting local wildlife, consider turning your stump into a monolith – a name for a sculpted standing stump left in place to decay naturally. Monoliths provide valuable habitat for insects, birds, and fungi. We’ve created many for customers in the past and can show you examples of our work. It’s a great way to combine sustainability with aesthetics for your outdoor space.
