The Project
Black poplars are one of the rarest native trees in the UK, and this one in North Tyneside was a particularly large specimen. With growing concerns about branch failure in high winds, the homeowner needed a significant crown reduction, but with the property sitting within a Conservation Area, this wasn’t a job that could be carried out easily. It required expert assessment, local authority approval, and two skilled climbers. That’s where our team of experienced tree surgeons in Newcastle came in to help.
The Challenge
The size of the tree made this a demanding job from the outset. Working at height in a massive canopy for a full day, on rope and harness, is no small feat. On top of that, the Conservation Area designation meant all work had to comply with local authority regulations. Our recommendations were assessed and formally approved before a single branch came down. Getting the approval right was just as important as carrying out the work.
Our Approach
Before any work began, Tree Fella’s founder and Principal Arborist, Simon Forster, carried out a detailed assessment of the tree and prepared a schedule of recommendations, which were submitted to and approved by the local authority.
On site, two of our highly experienced climbers worked exclusively from rope and harness, carefully and systematically reducing the crown by 5 metres in height and 3 metres laterally. The project involved a full day of work, which was completed safely, efficiently, and in full compliance with Conservation Area regulations.

The Result
The crown reduction was completed successfully, taking 5m off the height and 3m off the lateral spread. The tree is now significantly safer in high winds, with the risk of branch failure greatly reduced. The standard of the work earned a direct compliment from the council tree manager, which for a job carried out under scrutiny in a Conservation Area, says it all. Need more convincing?
