What is target pruning?

Target pruning is a method of tree pruning utilised by qualified and competent arborists to manage the safe removal of tree branches in a way that is least impactful to the tree. Also known as natural tree pruning, it involves making precise cuts beyond the collar of the tree branch, and not against the trunk of the tree.

Let’s take a closer look at target pruning, why it’s used, and how it works.

What are the benefits of target pruning?

Target pruning is just one part of our tree trimming and pruning services – and it is scientifically recognised as the kindest and most beneficial pruning method, safeguarding a tree’s well-being and structural integrity.

By keeping the collar of the branch intact, trees:

  • Heal quicker and more naturally, inline with natural branch shedding
  • Reduce the risk of decay pockets in the parent stem where the branch has been removed
  • Minimise the risk of diseases and decay by reducing the time the tree’s sapwood is exposed
  • Maintain their visual appearance by leaving no unsightly stubs
  • Benefit from stronger and healthier growth

This is because the tree collar contains the natural defence mechanisms needed to repair the ‘wound.’ It’s also a cost-effective tree trimming service, as it can prevent problems before they arise.

Why might someone need to target-prune a tree?

Tree and shrub pruning services exist because, sometimes, their quick growth can block light or restrict access. To allow them to flourish and thrive as naturally as possible, tree surgeons act as a helping hand by:

  • Detaching branches that have been damaged by extreme weather
  • Removing diseased branches to stop them from infecting the rest of the tree
  • Reshaping the overall branch pattern to maximise or minimise shade
  • Keeping the branches a safe distance away from hazards (power lines, windows, pedestrian paths)
  • Adapting the tree shape to create a clear space around it
  • Preventing the infestations of pests

How does target pruning compare to other tree trimming methods?

Sometimes, target pruning might not be the best method for the job, and that’s ok.

Perhaps the positioning of a branch means we can’t target-prune safely, or the branch may be too big or damaged for the method to be effective.

Some alternatives to target pruning include:

  • Crown reduction, lifting and thinning: The selective trimming and removal of branches to modify a tree canopy.
  • Pollarding: Where only a tree’s top branches are cut and trimmed to encourage new top growth while restricting the final size; often seen on street trees, such as London Plane.
  • Coppicing: A traditional tree trimming and pruning service where a tree is cut down to its base, encouraging new shoots; used traditionally to regenerate firewood for harvesting regularly
  • Directional pruning: Where branches are deliberately selected for removal to change the direction of a tree’s growth; often seen near power lines and overhead utilities

Tree trimming vs tree pruning: What’s the difference?

Pruning and trimming are a tree surgeon’s bread and butter, but they have different purposes.

Pruning (including target pruning) is a strategic method of tree care that addresses a specific issue, such as a risk feature, diseased branch or damage. Tree trimming focuses more on shaping a tree’s appearance and managing its size; sometimes called topiary. The same goes for hedge trimming and pruning services.
