The Project
Three conifer stumps at a residential property in Rowlands Gill had been left behind after the trees were felled, sitting in a narrow bed alongside the driveway. The homeowner wanted them removed, but the tight access and close proximity to the driveway stonework meant it wasn’t a straightforward job. Care and precision were needed to get the stumps out without causing any collateral damage, which is why they requested the expertise of our tree surgeons in Gateshead.
The Challenge
The stumps were positioned in a narrow bed directly beside the driveway, leaving very little room to manoeuvre. The client was clear that the driveway stonework was not to be disturbed, so our team of tree surgeons needed to work carefully within tight constraints, grinding down each stump without encroaching on the surrounding area. This was also a one day job, requiring efficiency from our expert tree surgeons.
Our Approach
Before grinding began, we exposed the stumps by clearing away rocks and debris, then carefully lifted the pin kerbs closest to the stumps so they wouldn’t be damaged and could be reinstalled once the work was done. The nearby flagstones were lifted too, giving clear access to grind out each stump below ground level. Utility checks were carried out first, following Before You Dig practice, to detect and avoid underground power, water, and gas before any digging started. Once all three stumps were ground out, we relaid the flagstones and neatly restacked the pin kerbs, leaving the bed clear and the driveway stonework exactly as the client left it. The whole stump removal job was completed in a single day.
The Result
All three stumps were successfully removed safely in a single day. The narrow bed alongside the driveway was left clear and tidy, with no disturbance to the stonework. The client got a clean, stump-free finish without any damage to their driveway.
The outcome for the Client
The client had peace of mind that the job would be carried out professionally, and was left with a blank slate to replant as they wished, with no hassle and at a low cost. Stumps can be a daunting obstacle to planting, and we made them a zero hassle problem for this client.
